India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement Brings New Visa Pathways for Indian Nationals
The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force today, 20 October 2026, bringing with it a set of new visa commitments for Indian nationals. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has confirmed the details this week, so here's what's actually changing, and what isn't changing yet.

Two new Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visa categories
From 20 October 2026, two new TEE visa pathways are open for Indian nationals with a qualifying job offer:
India Skilled Work Visa, for highly skilled occupations, with most places allocated to roles already on New Zealand's Green List.
India Iconic Work Visa, for a small number of professions considered iconic to India: yoga instructor, Indian chef, music teacher, and AYUSH practitioner.
Together, these two categories allow up to 5,000 TEE visa holders in New Zealand at any one time. Applicants still need to meet all the usual immigration requirements: a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer, relevant qualifications, English language requirements, and health, character and identity checks. The visa is valid for 3 years and does not lead to residence, so it's a temporary work pathway rather than a stepping stone to permanent residence.
Post-study work rights: a change for PhD graduates only
From 16 November 2026, Indian graduates with a New Zealand PhD will become eligible for a post-study work visa of up to 4 years, up from the current 3 years. This change applies specifically to doctoral graduates. INZ's announcement doesn't mention any change to post-study work settings for Indian master's or bachelor's graduates, so if you've seen reporting elsewhere suggesting broader changes at those levels, that isn't reflected in INZ's own confirmation.
In-study work rights: a floor, not a change right now
All eligible students, including Indian students, can currently work up to 25 hours a week while studying, and that stays the same today. What the FTA adds is a commitment that if New Zealand's work-rights settings for students were ever reduced in future, Indian students would still be guaranteed at least 20 hours a week. In practice, nothing changes for Indian students' in-study work rights right now, this is a protection against future tightening rather than a new benefit today.
A working holiday scheme is coming, but not yet
A new working holiday scheme for Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 is part of the agreement, capped at 1,000 places a year and allowing successful applicants to spend up to 12 months in New Zealand. Importantly, INZ says this scheme will be introduced within 2 years of the FTA entering into force, so sometime before 20 October 2028. It is not available to apply for yet, and no specific launch date has been given.
What this means for you
If you're an Indian national considering a move to New Zealand for work, the two new TEE visa categories are open now, provided you have a qualifying job offer in a Green List-aligned occupation or one of the four named "iconic" roles. If you're finishing a PhD in New Zealand, your post-study work visa entitlement is about to extend to 4 years from mid-November. If you're a younger Indian national hoping to use a working holiday visa, that pathway is confirmed but not yet open, so it's one to watch rather than act on immediately.
As with any new visa category, the details of eligibility and the application process matter, and INZ's guidance may be refined as the new categories bed in.
