Skilled Migrant Category Changes Are Now Live: What Changed

If you've been waiting for the dust to settle on New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) changes, we are now live. As of 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand's confirmed changes to the SMC Resident Visa and the related work to residence visas have officially come into effect. Here's what's actually changed, in plain English, and what it means if you're partway through your journey to residence — or just starting to think about it.

Two new pathways join the points system

The SMC now has two additional ways in. Alongside the existing points-based pathway, there are two new dedicated pathways:

Skilled Work Experience Pathway — for people with 5+ years of relevant work experience: broadly, 3 years of directly relevant experience plus 2 years working in New Zealand, at 1.1 times the median wage threshold.
Trades and Technician Pathway — for trades and technical roles, requiring a Level 4+ qualification, 2.5 years of relevant experience, plus 1.5 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand at the median wage threshold.

The wage threshold now "locks in" earlier

This is arguably the most practically important change. Previously, applicants effectively had to keep meeting the wage threshold as it stood at the time of their residence application... even if that threshold had risen since they started their job. From today, applicants generally only need to meet the wage threshold that was in effect when they started accruing their skilled work experience, with a five-month grace period if thresholds increase between visa grant and the job actually starting. This removes a real source of anxiety for people who've watched wage thresholds creep up while they've been working toward the required experience.

Points-based pathway: more ways to earn points

For those still going the traditional points route, a few things have shifted in your favour:

Points for overseas bachelor's degrees, Washington/Sydney Accord qualifications, and postgraduate certificates have increased.
Accountants with CPA Australia membership can now claim points through occupational registration.
English language test results are now valid for 5 years instead of 2, for eligible occupational registrations, a welcome change if your test result was starting to feel like it was on the clock.
New Zealand qualifications and New Zealand work experience now carry more weight toward the 6-point threshold.

Requirement for under-lying bachelors for offshore post-graduate qualifications, and self-employment: know the fine print

Two changes worth flagging if they apply to you. First, Level 8–9 qualifications must now be supported by evidence of an underlying bachelor's degree. Second, and this one catches people out, self-employment can no longer be used to demonstrate "directly relevant work experience" under the new pathways, because INZ says it's too hard to verify independently. If your work history includes a stretch of self-employment, it's worth talking through how that affects your application before you rely on it.

What this means for you

If you're already partway through gathering evidence for an SMC application, these changes may open up a pathway you didn't have before, or they may mean re-checking which wage threshold actually applies to you.
